Siaja (starring Anna Lambe) is a young Inuk mother who dreams of reinventing herself in her tiny Arctic community of Ice Cove. After a spontaneous — and extremely public — exit from her marriage, Siaja goes from a stale but stable life at the side of self-absorbed husband Ting (Kelly William) to crashing on her mother Neevee’s (Maika Harper) couch with her feisty daughter Bun (Keira Belle Cooper) in tow. Siaja runs at the chance to build a new, independent life for herself, but it won’t be easy in a small Arctic town where everybody knows your business. And just when she thinks things couldn’t get messier, a surprise visitor named Alistair (Jay Ryan) brings to light a long-held secret from Neevee and Siaja’s past. Turns out blowing up her life was the easy part; now comes the hilarious chaos of piecing it all back together.

Oh but this looks like LOTS of fun!

Possessed of a quirky premise but grounded by very real issues of self-determination and defying of expectations, North of North looks to have the lot – great characters, tons of good humour, snappy lines and that wonderful Canadian gift for self-deprecatory reflection.

It’s everything you could ask for in a comedy series and it’ll be fun to see how Siaja wrestles with reinventing her life when everyone she knows is watching on like it’s an too real season of some snowbound reality TV series.

North of North drops its eight-episode season on 10 April on Netflix.
