Another year and lots more movies to watch! Hurrah!

Apart from reading books, my other great enduring love is losing myself in a lovely, long movie and with eclectic tastes, that opens a lot of movies to watch when I’m in the mood.

Which, yes, is pretty much always.

These three wildly different films are a taste of what’s in store in 2026 and frankly, if I could, I’d be camped outside the cinema now … and yes, I know, that’s a lot of footpath camping given the wildly different release dates, and in the case of two of them in Australia, no release dates yet at all.

So, yeah, maybe I’ll stay home until they release but once they are … whoosh!

It’s a herder mystery, and everyone is a suspect. In this witty, new breed of mystery in theaters next May, George (Hugh Jackman) is a shepherd who reads detective novels to his beloved sheep every single night, assuming they can’t possibly understand. But when a mysterious incident disrupts life on the farm, the sheep realize they must become the detectives. As they follow the clues and investigate human suspects, they prove that even sheep can be brilliant crime-solvers. The Sheep Detectives, also known as Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie, is directed by acclaimed animation filmmaker Kyle Balda, director of the animated movies The Lorax, Minions, Despicable Me 3, and Minions: The Rise of Gru, making his first live-action movie (though the sheep are animated). The screenplay is written by Craig Mazin; adapted from the book Three Bags Full from Leonie Swann. Produced by Tim Bevan, Lindsay Doran, Eric Fellner. Made by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Working Title Films, Lord & Miller, and Three Strange Angels Productions. (courtesy First Showing)

The Sheep Detectives opens 7 May 2026 in Australia and 8 May in U.S.

“Based on the untold true story…” This new film brings to the big screen the most transformative years of iconic actor Jimmy Stewart’s life—from winning the Academy Award for Best Actor in The Philadelphia Story to enlisting & becoming a combat pilot & commander in the U.S. Army Air Corps at the beginning of World War II. Stewart flew 20 missions over Europe, rising to the rank of colonel, only to return home broken and disheartened. And then George Bailey came calling. Jimmy is directed by producer / filmmaker Aaron Burns, director of only the films Legacy Peak and Birthright Outlaw previously. The screenplay is written by Justin Strawhand (also of War Against the Weak). Produced by Aaron Burns, David C. Cook, Angela Galgani Sullivan, John Norton, Justin Strawhand. Burns & Co. Jimmy opens 6 November 2026 in the U.S.; no Australian release date yet.

The sequel to cosmic disaster movie Greenland (2020). In a continuation of the story, the Garrity family, who survive a near-extinction level event when a comet hits Earth, must leave the safety of the Greenland bunker after five years and embark upon a perilous journey across the decimated frozen wasteland of Europe to find a new home. Greenland 2: Migration, also known as simply Greenland: Migration, is once again directed by the American filmmaker / stuntman Ric Roman Waugh, also director of the movies In the Shadows, Felon, Snitch, Shot Caller, Angel Has Fallen, Greenland, National Champions, and Kandahar previously. The screenplay is written by Chris Sparling and Mitchell LaFortune. Produced by Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Sébastien Raybaud, John Zois, Gerard Butler, Alan Siegel, Brendon Boyea, & Ric Roman Waugh. Made by STX, Anton, Thunder Road, and G-BASE Film Production. (courtesy First Showing)

Greenland 2: Migration opens in U.S. on 9 January 2026; no Australian release date yet.
