A rat named Remy dreams of becoming a great chef despite his family’s wishes, and the obvious problem of being a rat in a decidedly rodent-phobic profession. When fate places Remy in the sewers of Paris, he finds himself ideally situated beneath a restaurant made famous by his culinary hero, Auguste Gusteau. Remy’s passion for cooking soon sets into motion a hilarious and exciting rat race that turns the world of Paris upside down. (synopsis courtesy Pixar / Disney)

Watching anyone discover their passion in life is an unmitigated joy.

The look that passes over their face when they work out that “This is what I love!” is priceless because you’re watching them find out what makes life worthwhile, what really makes being on this earth worthwhile.

That sheer, unadulterated joy of self-realisation courses through Pixar’s 2007 animated feature Ratatouille where a French rat can finally indulge his love of cooking, something that you would not expect the average Rattus rattus to really embrace.

Eat the food, yes; cook it? Not so much.

But Remy bucks the trend and this Side by Side video from Pixar, which compares the original concept drawings with the final finished product, beautifully celebrates the share joy of Remy coming alive as he finally owns who he really is and let his culinary freak flag fly.
