When an ambitious, buttoned-up US Marshal inherits a big unruly dog, he soon realizes the dog he didn’t want may be the partner he needs. Turner & Hooch stars Josh Peck as Scott Turner Jr., the son of Tom Hanks’s character from the original film. Joining him as the titular lead are Five French Mastiffs, who are all portraying the role of Scott’s slobbery and loveable new dog Hooch, who is also named after his father’s original Mastiff. The series also stars Carra Patterson as Jessica Baxter, Scott’s brave, street-smart partner; Brandon Jay McLaren (Graceland) as Xavier Wilson, a cool, enigmatic marine-turned-US Marshal; Anthony Ruivivar (Third Watch) as Chief James Mendez, Scott’s boss with a secret soft spot for Scott’s new dog, Hooch; Lyndsy Fonseca (Kick-Ass) as Laura Turner, Scott’s sweet, animal-loving sister; Jeremy Maguire (Modern Family) as Matthew Garland, Laura’s dog-loving son; and Vanessa Lengies (Glee) as Erica Mouniere, the quirky head of the US Marshals dog training program. It will also feature Becca Tobin (Glee) and Reginald VelJohnson (Die Hard) for the recurring roles of Brooke and Mayor David Sutton. (synopsis via Coming Soon)
If it’s true that every dog has its day (very much the case with this new series), then it’s equally as valid in our hyperactive digital streaming age that every movie has to have a sequel.
The latest movie in the firing line is 1989’s Turner & Hooch, which you will remember starred Tom Hanks as an adorably neurotic police investigator named Scott Turner who has his life transformed in the very best of ways by his unwanted new canine companion.
The film is comedy gold with a real humanity and heart to it and you might wonder why it even needs a sequel. (Which is, of course, pointless, because logic plays no part in the decision to leverage a movie or old TV series for “new” material.)
The fact is it likely doesn’t but it’s getting one and while the trailer doesn’t suggest an out-of-the-box viewing experience, it looks like sweet and reassuring way to spend some time and in the hellhole that is the neverending pandemic, that can’t be a bad thing.
Turner & Hooch premieres on Disney Plus on 21 July.
