In a city where fire, water, land, and air residents live together, a fiery young woman and a go-with-the-flow guy are about to discover something elemental: how much they actually have in common. [Elemental] features the voice talents of Leah Lewis as Ember; Mamoudou Athie as Wade; Ronnie del Carmen as Ember’s soon-to-be retired dad, Bernie; Shila Ommi as Ember’s love-seeking mom, Cinder; Wendi McLendon-Covey as Wade’s stormy and Air-Ball-loving boss, Gale; Catherine O’Hara as Wade’s welcoming mom, Brook; Mason Wertheimer as Ember’s admiring earth neighbour, Clod; and Joe Pera as an overgrown city bureaucrat, Fern. Life doesn’t get any better than letting yourself be immersed in the animated wonder and emotional vivacious of a Pixar film.

You can almost feel the outside world washing off you as the finely-wrought characters, vivacious humour and luminously colourful visuals tell you a story that, no doubt, will rip your heart out at some point, but always, ALWAYS, put it back again, better and more greatly moved than it was before.

Elemental is the latest animated joy to come our way from the people who have brought us Toy Story, UP and Inside Out, and it looks absolutely beautiful, captivating and heartfelt.

Directed by Pete Sohn who gifted us the woefully under-appreciated The Good Dinosaur, this film looks like delivering everything and more we love and expect from a Pixar movie, and in Australia’s case, doing it in Winter where some sparkly bright colour and effervescent characterisation is just what the seasonal doctor ordered.

Elemental opens in Australia on 15 June and U.S. on 16 June.
