SNAPSHOT
The series, which premieres August 7, is a quasi-revival of the original featuring the original actors of the 1990s teen drama playing “heightened” versions of themselves. In a tongue-in-cheek twist, the actors star as versions of themselves reuniting as they consider a 90210 revival. How’s that for meta? (source: EW)
My TV viewing tastes have changed a great deal over the years but between 1990 and 2000, I spent many an episode, 293 of them in fact, watching Brandon (Jason Priestley) and Brenda (Shannen Doherty) navigate their way through school, and the years after (because 10 years of high school is more than enough for anyone) in the upmarket environs of Beverly Hills.
Sure Beverley Hills 90210 was often pulpy and overwrought but by god I loved the show, utterly immersed in the lives of these teenagers.
Looking back it was, of course, gleefully over the top and a little bit silly, something that the actors and prodcuers kept in mind when they decided to bring the show back this August for a limited run series that is more than a little satirical.
That could either work (see The Brady Bunch movies; well #1, not #2) or not (see the godawful mess that was Bewitched the movie) but one thing’s for sure – the show has an awesome theme song and the new promo for the revival wisely makes the most of it.
Enjoy, and get ready for the past and present to ironically collide …
