“You cannot save the human race. Nothing can save the human race”
Humanity can’t take a trick can it?
If it’s not battling invading aliens, flesh-craving zombies or climatic collapse, it’s caught ass deep in the middle of a war between rather nasty supernatural beings.
And this time, it’s only Frankenstein, as envisaged by talented artist Kevin Grevioux in his Darkstorm Studios graphic novel I, Frankenstein, who can save the human race (or doom it depending on whose side you’re on), which is as usual in rather a spot of leading-to-our-annihilation bother.
While the trailer does suggest a kind of been-there-done-that feel to it – understandable since the team behind the Underworld franchise have brought their uniquely gothic sensibilities to the film – and the whole saving mankind from peril line has been done to death, I found myself fascinated by the storyline itself.
If that holds up, and it’s no guarantee it will in a blockbuster world where style all too often triumphs over substance (although you can hope given the high calibre and intelligence of the source material and the fact that Kevin Grevioux worked on the story with screenwriter Stuart Beattie), this could one darkly engrossing, enthralling movie.
The presence of consummately skilled actors like Aaron Eckhart and Bill Nighy also gives considerable cause for hope for what looks like an imaginative take on a classic story.
I Frankenstein opens in the USA and UK on 24 January 2014 (no dates for Australia at this time.)
