Carême follows the thrilling story of the world’s first celebrity chef, Antonin Carême (starring Benjamin Voisin), who rose from humble beginnings in poverty in Paris right up to the height of culinary stardom in Napoleon’s Europe. While he dreams only of becoming the most famous chef in the world, his talent and ambitions attract the attention of renowned and powerful politicians, who use him as a spy for France. Determined to escape poverty and fulfill his dream, Carême can choose revenge, or he can have it all — women, wealth, fame — but at what cost? His love? His soul? His life? Carême is a series created by actor Ian Kelly, last seen in the film The King’s Man. Co-created and written by Davide Serino. With additional writing for the series by Rémy Diaz, Olivier Kohn, Camille Couasse, Sarah Farkas, Storm Sigal Battesti, Alessandro Fabbri, Stefano Sardo. And with episodes directed by Laïla Marrakchi, Martin Bourboulon, and Matias Boucard. Executive produced by Vanessa van Zuylen and Dominique Farrugia. (courtesy First Showing)
We all know that TV shows often play fast and loose with the truth.
But even so, if only a kernel of what they present is true, and the good ones are often more authentic than that, then what enthralling people our global forefathers were.
Take Antonin Carême (aka Antoine Carême), a man who climbed from poverty to culinary celebrity and in so doing achieved a great many epic things, good and bad.
However you slice it, his looks like a fascinating story in ambition, hubris and dream-fulfilling and we’re counting down the days until Carême premieres on AppleTV+ on 30 April.
