The story revolves around the annual Christmas pageant in a small town, which is turned upside down by the arrival of the Herdman siblings. Known as “the worst kids in the history of the world,” the Herdmans bring unexpected mayhem to the rehearsals and the performance itself. Their disruptive antics lead to a series of humorous and heartwarming events that ultimately transform the traditional Christmas play into something truly extraordinary. Based on the beloved 1972 book by Barbara Robinson, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever looks to be one of those classic Christmas films in the making.

Its message of unconditional and inclusivity is exactly what the season is all about, and while all those pious Christians talking about love but not practising does not this ex-churchgoer’s stomach churn, I love that the real message of the Gospels actually makes its way through.

No word yet on when/if this will reach Australia but it’s likely to be a streaming option rather than a cinema release.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever opens 8 November in U.S. with Australian dates TBA.
