In the film, St Nick (voiced by Gerard Butler) receives a delayed letter on Christmas Eve from the Princess of Hearts. He and his dedicated team of reindeer set off to Wonderland, where they’re greeted by the mean and miserable Queen of Hearts, who hates all things Christmas… especially presents! Can St Nick, aided by Alice, the Mad Hatter and March Hare, show the Queen the true meaning of Christmas and save the day before it’s too late? The Night Before Christmas in Wonderland is an animated film directed by BAFTA-winning British filmmaker Peter Baynton, director of The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, and a few other animated short films. The screenplay is written by Sara Daddy. Based on Carys Bexington’s bestselling book of the same name, which mashes up Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland & Clement Clarke Moore’s poem “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” (also known as “A Visit from St Nicholas”). Produced by Camilla Deakin and Ruth Fielding. With original music & songs written by longtime Robbie Williams collaborator Guy Chambers & Grammy winner Amy Wadge. (courtesy First Showing)
What happens when the very modern essence of modern Christmas comes face-to-face with the Queen of Hearts, someone who doesn’t like what the season of giving and goodwill means one little bit?
Well, you might think nothing very good, but the reality, fictionally at least, is that maybe, just maybe, the Queen might come to understand what the festive season is all about.
Based on the book of the same name by Carys Bexington, The Night Before Christmas in Wonderland looks like it might just be the gift we all need this Christmas and that maybe something quite terrible can be overcome by something forcefully good.
We can only hope …
The Night Before Christmas in Wonderland releases on Hulu on 15 November; date for Australia TBA.
