Thelma is a small-time pony who dreams of becoming a glamourous music star. In a pink and glitter-filled moment of fate, Thelma is transformed into a unicorn and instantly rises to global stardom. But this new life of fame comes at a cost. Thelma the Unicorn is a quirky, hilarious, and heartfelt ride from directors … Jared Hess (director of Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre, Gentlemen Broncos, Don Verdean, Masterminds, Murder Among the Mormons, Ninety-Five Senses) & Lynn Wang (her feature directorial debut after the Unikitty! series + work on Star vs. the Forces of Evil and other series). The screenplay is written by Jared Hess & Jerusha Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre, Gentlemen Broncos, Austenland, Don Verdean). Produced by Pam Coats. With animation by Mikros Animation & Netflix. And music by John Powell. (courtesy First Showing)
Who doesn’t need some magic in their lives?
Given the state of the world right now, it’s safe to say we all do, but what if it’s all fake, the result of glittery silver and pink paint splashed randomly on an aspirational pony in a paddock?
OK that was weirdly way too specific, but that’s because that’s precisely what happens to Thelma the Unicorn that takes her from ordinary pony wannabe to sparkling worldwide viral hit.
She loves it, the world’s people love it but how real and sustainable is it if it’s all built on fakery?
That’s a lot to deal with in one animated feature film, but the trailer would suggest we’ll have lots of fun along the way, and while I have to agree with First Showing that “This looks way, way too similar to the Sing series of movies”, it’s got heart, personality and technicolour zest and that should keep it zinging along quite nicely.
Thelma the Unicorn premieres on Netflix on 17 May.
Of course it all sorted with the books by Aaron Blabey so here’s the author reading, naturally enough, Thelma the Unicorn …
