Hart to Hart is an American television series, starring Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers as Jonathan and Jennifer Hart, a wealthy couple who moonlight as amateur detectives. The series was created by writer Sidney Sheldon and produced by Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg. It ran from 1979 to 1984 on the ABC Television Network. (source: wikipedia)
I adored this show growing up.
There was something about Jonathan and Jennifer Hart’s extracurricular private eye adventures that it won me over hook, line and sinker to such an extent that I still love watching the show 30 years later.
That doesn’t happen with many TV shows which date faster than expired roast chickens on a hot summer’s day.
Sure it could a little cheesy and over the top like much of Aaron Spelling’s output, but it was also warm, fun and centred on the close relationship between the two millionaire sleuths and their cook/chauffeur/butler, he of the gravelly-voice and every present cigar, Max (Lionel Stander).
Thanks to reruns and a fascination with retro TV/music/movies, it has remained on the pop culture zeitgeist ever since it debuted – although to be fair it’s probably circling the periphery far more than the luminous centre as of late – and so I was delighted to find out that Adam Scott had chosen to film a frame-by-frame remake of the opening title sequence of Hart to Hart as part of his The Greatest Event in Television History series on Adult Swim.

Following on from the well-received showing of his Simon & Simon title sequence remake, which was arguably one of the greatest moments in television history – how on earth could it not be? – Adam Scott co-opted his TV wife, Amy Poehler (they are newly married on NBC’s Parks and Recreation) to remake the title sequence to Hart to Hart.
And it is, as expected, a triumph.
It is making me dream the impossible dream – a remake of Hart to Hart for a new generation, starring, of course Scott and Poehler.
Yes what started as an affectionate parody could become … another greatest event in television history!
Nah, probably not.
But till that happens, we have this wonderful recreation to enjoy.
Thanks to vulture.com for alerting me to this amazing pop culture gem.
