SNAPSHOT
Described as being a “star-crossed science fiction love story,” The Space Between Us follows two teens from different worlds. Gardner Elliot, the first human born on Mars, is secretly raised in an experimental colony after his astronaut mother dies during childbirth. Sixteen years later, Gardner begins an online romance with a girl living in Colorado and hatches a plan to travel across the universe to meet her. Now, on the run, with Earth’s gravity threatening his very existence, Gardner must race against time and nature to find his love and win her heart. Once united, the two teens venture to seek out the enigmatic billionaire who funded the original expedition to Mars, in hopes of uncovering information about Gardner’s mother and the mysterious circumstances surrounding how Gardner came into existence. Now this my friends is the very 21st century definition of a long distance romance.
I mean, you cannot go much further than Mars and Earth when it comes to a not-exactly-next-door affair of the heart; OK granted you could go much further in theory but Mars is about the only planet that we have a fighting chance of reaching and colonising any time soon so we’ll use it as our outer Cupidic distance measure for now.
Some sort of flimsy plausibility aside, The Space Between Us gives a rather sweet look at what might happen if the ultimate outsider, someone once of Earth (if only via pregnancy) finds himself drawn back to his planet of origin by love sweet love and has to fight heart, soul and (literally) body to be with the one young woman who makes Earth feel like home.
Yes the title is groan-worthy but the story itself seems quite sweet and an imaginative testament to the motivating power of love.
The Space Between Us opens 19 August in USA.
