The film will explore the continuing journey of Paul Atreides, now united with the Fremen on Arrakis. A boy becomes the Messiah of nomads on a desert planet that has giant worms that protect a commodity called Spice. Spice changes people into travelers, mystics and madmen. What price will he pay to become the new ruler of their universe? Dune: Part Two, or Dune 2, is once again directed by acclaimed Quebecois filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, director of movies Maelstrom, Polytechnique, Incendies, Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario, Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, and the first Dune movie previously. The screenplay is written by Jon Spaihts and Denis Villeneuve. Adapted from Frank Herbert’s iconic novel of the same name first published in 1965. Produced by Cale Boyter, Tanya Lapointe, Patrick McCormick, Mary Parent, and Denis Villeneuve. (courtesy First Showing)
It’s fair to say I really liked the first cinematic instalment of Dune.
Dune is a landmark piece of cinematic sci-fi storytelling which is enthrallingly immersive, brilliantly epic, rich in character and emotionally evocative while delivering up political intrigue and action – a perfect sci-fi space opera writ brilliantly large as these types of movies always should be and which stands the film in good stead for the thrilling conclusion of the tale to come.
Thankfully, and yes, this is based on one trailer alone but what a brilliantly evocative trailer it is, both visually and emotionally, it looks as if its successor if going to be every bit as good, delivering up an epic conclusion to one of the great sci-fi stories of all time.
And at the rate this year is going, it won’t be long until we are back on Arrakis, watching a people long oppressed and exploited, fight for long-denied freedom and a chance to chart their own destiny.
Dune: Part Two opens in Australia on 2 November and in U.S. on 3 November.
