After an unfortunate encounter in the garden, Simon’s Cat goes to great lengths to avoid an imminent visit to the vet. As always, the question remains – will his long-suffering owner Simon step up to the challenge? …‘Simon’s Cat: Off to the Vet’ has screened at multiple film festivals around the world and was awarded The McLaren Award for Best British Animation at the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2016. There’s a memory seared into my mind that I am fairly sure will be with me until the day I die (and likely beyond).
It’s of the time we took my cat Ginger to the vet and I made the rookie mistake of undoing the latch on the cat carrier BEFORE – I was a kid so who knows why I did it – we reached the door of the vet.
In literal nanoseconds, Ginger was out of his temporary “prison” (I’m sure he saw it that way) and racing through the yards eitehr side of the office which was located in a residential office.
He didn’t go onto the office thank the great Persian Kitteh in the sky, and stayed still long enough finally for me to catch him, but it was a salutary lesson in not giving your cat an inch when they’re on the way to the vet.
It’s a lesson well learnt by Simon Tofield, the talented man behind the ever-delightful Simon’s Cat, who raised funds in 2014 to make a 12-minute film about the joys and mostly otherwise of taking your cat to the vet.
As you can imagine it’s a fraught but highly comical adventure that beautifully illustrates how even when they NEED to go, that your divinely cute cat will fight you every step of the way.
It may not be that much fun in real life but my lord it makes for one supremely-enjoyable, very funny, film festival-award winning animated short film.
