SNAPSHOT
Recent college graduate Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his true purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle. Blue Beetle is directed by Puerto Rican filmmaker Angel Manuel Soto, director of the films Frailty, The Farm, and Charm City Kings previously, plus many other shorts and a few documentaries – including Menudo: Forever Young. The screenplay is written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer; based on the DC Comics character created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, & Cully Hamner. It’s produced by Peter Safran and John Rickard; made by DC Studios, eOne, S&K Pictures, and the Safran Company. (courtesy First Showing)
Spiders are so yesterday!
Well, not really since Spider-Man is still doing very nicely with them, thank you very much, but the advent of Blue Beetle on the big screen is a sure sign that a wholly different kind of exoskeleton-sporting life form is about to its moment in the superhero sun.
And what a lot of fun it looks like it’s going to be with Jaime Reyes coming across an alien scarab beetle that will CHANGE. HIS. LIFE, although it’s going to be a bit of a bumpy ride because the blue beetle in question is not known for its consistency of welcome to its host:
It’s some kind of world destroying weapon – it’s design to protect its host. Sometimes it does want you want, and sometimes it doesn’t.
So power and fickleness? What could possibly go wrong?
Possibility plenty but that is going to be part of the fun I suspect …
Blue Beetle opens on 17 August in Australia and 18 August in USA.
