The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel — which debuted in November 2017 — follows Midge, a Jewish American housewife, and her family in 1960s New York City. Their seemingly perfect life is turned on its head when her husband, Joel Maisel (Michael Zegen), announces he’s leaving her for his secretary. While rambling about her new normal at a bar, Midge stumbles into a new career as a comedienne. The show also stars Alex Borstein (Susie Myerson), Tony Shalhoub (Abe Weissman), Marin Hinkle (Rose Weissman), Kevin Pollak (Moise Maisel), Caroline Aaron (Shirley Maisel) and Jane Lynch (Sophie Lennon). Ah the ups and downs of life.

Over four amazingly and emotionally resonant seasons, where Midge found fame and fortune on the stand-up comedy circuit before losing it all, we have seen through whipsmart quips, fabulous fashion and achingly honest honest suffused with sparkling humour, a duality of what it means to be alive that came with the sort of sharply clever writing we have to expect and love from Amy Sherman-Palladino.

While all we have is a teaser at the moment, it suggests that perhaps the setback and grounded truthfulness of season 4 may give way to a resurgent season 5 where Midge might actually, some sadness aside, get her happy ever after.

After all, if anyone deserves it it is the tenaciously upbeat but beaten down Mrs. Maisel.

The fifth and final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel premieres 14 April on Prime Video.
