Star Trek Beyond, the highly-anticipated next installment in the globally popular Star Trek franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry and reintroduced by J.J. Abrams in 2009, returns with director Justin Lin (The Fast and the Furious franchise) at the helm of this epic voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her intrepid crew. In Beyond, the Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test. With the third instalment in the new rebooted Star Trek film series less than two months away, a whole series of very cool, colourful and quite artistic character posters have been released for Star Trek: Beyond.

Everyone is featured including two new characters (one of the Big Bad du Jour, Krall) making their appearance in a film that, according to Collider, will see the crew of the Enterprise facing one of their greatest challenges yet:

“As we’ve seen in the latest trailer from the Star Trek fan event, Star Trek Beyond sees the crew in the midst of their famous voyage into deep space where they encounter a mysterious new enemy, Idris Elba’s Krall. The crew is forced to evacuate the Enterprise through escape pods after the ship is seemingly destroyed, and they become stranded and separated on a planet. That’s where Jaylah comes into the picture. As she says in the footage, she knows what’s going on, but as for the rest of us, we’ll have to keep guessing.”

While the first trailer made the film look like The Fast and the Furious in space – no surprise given that Justin Lin has directed films in that franchise – the new one feels far more like the big, brash, epic swashbuckling Star Trek we love and know.

It definitely looks the kind of film you need to see on the big BIG screen, as befits a galaxy-spanning franchise such as this one.

Star Trek: Beyond opens in Australia on 21 July and in USA on 22 July.
