And the sci-fi mega0-movies just keep on coming.
Now we have the Guillermo Del Toro helmed-movie, Pacific Rim, which is based on an initial treatment by Travis Beacham (who has been given the job of writing a sequel already despite the movie not releasing till July 12, 2013 in USA; now that’s movie studio confidence people!), which previewed at Comic-Con this year, and it looks bigger than Ben Hur, Die Hard and Independence Day all rolled into one!
We have giant alien monsters (kaijus) who arrive on Earth via an inter dimensional portal deep in the Pacific Ocean! Hurrah!
And in response, as mankind fights to avert yet another apocalypse, we have giant robots manned by humanity (jaegers) fighting back. Yes!
And titanic battles, fiery speeches and valiant bravery all writ on a mammoth scale.
It is, as you might have guessed, what the movie industry terms a tentpole movie.
Now normally this sort of larger-than-life drama accompanied by all the attendant hype you’d expect, would have me quaking in my boots fearing another overblown bloated cinematic carcass like Battleship.
But the fact that Guillermo Del Toro is at the helm fills me with great hope.
He is a fanboy himself so knows what looks and feels good on sci-fi film like this, but more importantly if you’re looking to avoid a movie that is all looks and swagger but no soul or intelligence, he’s the man to be in control.
So yes I have only a 2 minute trailer to go on but I am exceedingly hopeful and extremely excited.
I will let you know if that’s vindicated sometime around late July next year.
