“The mood swings! That one looks fun.” Inside Out 2’s delightfully funny missing scene

The little voices inside Riley’s head know her inside and out—but this summer, everything changes. Pixar’s Inside Out 2 returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she’s not alone. Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is directed by animation filmmaker Kelsey Mann, a storyboard artist making his feature directorial debut after working on the Party Central short and the Monsters at Work series. The screenplay is by Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein. Based on the original Inside Out by Pete Docter, Ronnie Del Carmen, Meg LeFauve, and Josh Cooley. Produced by Mark Nielsen. At last count, the wondrously lovely yet meaningful animation triumph that is Inside Out 2 had surpassed the almighty Frozen as the biggest animated film in history!

It’s not hard to see why; not only does it have the legacy of a superlatively good predecessor to build on, but it tackles some truly big life moments with Pixar’s trademark blend of insightfulness, empathy and buoyant good humour.

Plus who doesn’t want to see JJoy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Tony Hale), Anger (Lewis Black) and Disgust (Liza Lapira) do their rambunctiously character-rich thing?

It’s quite simply a super thoughtful joy, and while it’s damn near perfect, it turns out there’s a deleted scene called “Puberty Park” that is every bit as good as what made it into the film and which proves that even the scenes that get cut can amuse and delight.

Inside Out 2 releases online and via Blu-Ray on 10 September in U.S.
