The short tells the story of a boy who rather spends his time indoors playing videogames instead of discovering whats waiting in front of the door. One day his Mum decides to get a little surprise for his son, which makes it hard for him to concentrate on his video game. (official synopsis via Laughing Squid)

The bond between a child and their dog is often a profound one.

They go everywhere together and the sense of companionship, especially when the child feels a bit outside the norm, can make a significant difference to the way they view life.

It’s that kind of transformative bond that the mum in Jacob Frey‘s touching animated short film, The Present, which has been screened at over 180 festivals and won more than 50 awards, is obviously hoping for when she gives her video game-obsessed son an unexpected gift of a puppy one day.

He isn’t all that pleased at first but then … well to say any more would spoil this beautiful story.

With a soundtrack by Zealand, and based on an equally-moving comic by Fabio Cola (see below the video), this is one short film you need to make some time for. Who knows, it may just change your life.
