Zootopia+ heads back to the fast-paced mammal metropolis of Zootopia in a short-form streaming series that dives deeper into the lives of some of the Oscar-winning movie’s most intriguing residents, including: Fru Fru, the fashion-forward arctic shrew; ZPD dispatcher Clawhauser, the sweet-toothed cheetah; and Flash, the smiling sloth who’s full of surprises. Zootopia+ is an animated streaming mini-series both written and directed by Josie Trinidad (Co-Head of Story on Zootopia; Head of Story on Ralph Breaks the Internet) and Trent Correy (Director of Once Upon a Snowman and Drop). It’s produced by Nathan Curtis (Associate Producer on Encanto and Raya and the Last Dragon before). The original Zootopia movie was directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore, and first opened in 2016. If you’ve paid more than five nanoseconds of attention and to this blog, and if you have, you have my undying gratitude, then you’ll know I love animated films.
The good ones, and there are so many of them these days, have eye-popping visual styling, engaging characters and narratives that operate on the good adult/child split so both parties are always entertained, something to which I can attest definitely does happen after many highly enjoyable guncle nieces & nephews visits to the cinema.
Zootopia, released in 2016, is one of the gems of the current golden age of cinema, about which I had this to say:
Zootopia is the kind of near-perfect film about which it is highly possible to rhapsodise forever – every last frame of animation, line of dialogue, character interaction and narrative moment is executed with great thought, intelligence and good humour and as it ends you can help that it could go on forever.
Admittedly I didn’t get my wish about the going on forever part BUT there’ll at least be something addition to the canon when the six episodes of Zootopia+ start streaming.
It’ll be a delight to spend time with these characters and in this world again, and you can only hope it’s just the start of a whole lot of cartoon shorts to come.
