… the new season will continue to follow the tumultuous romance between pirates Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and Blackbeard (Taika Waititi), both of whom are kinda sorta based on their real-life counterparts. Things didn’t end so well in the first season, so there’s going to be plenty of drama this time around … In addition to the return of the main cast — which includes Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matthew Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, David Fane, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon, and Leslie Jones — season 2 is bringing some new characters along for the ride. New guest stars include Minnie Driver, Bronson Pinchot, Ruibo Qian, Madeleine Sami, Anapela Polataivao, and Erroll Shand. (courtesy The Verge)
The first season of Our Flag Means Death was one of the most delightful streaming surprises of 2022.
Sure, we knew it was likely to be hilariously funny and as parodic as hell but who expected that embedded in a mischievously winning tale of piratical incompetence would be a gay love story for the pillaging ages?
The romance between Steve Bonnet and Blackbeard gave a show that gleefully made fun of pirate life and aristocratic inclinations a wonderful emotional heft and queer sensibility that made this comedically rich show an even more rewarding viewing experience.
It’s exciting to have a second season on the way and you can only hope that amidst all of the tumultuous lovelornness that true love may yet prevail …
Our Flag Means Death S2 premieres on 5 October on Max and in Australia on Binge
