Barbie is a … romantic comedy film based on the eponymous fashion doll line by Mattel and directed by Greta Gerwig, who co-wrote the screenplay with Noah Baumbach. It serves as the franchise’s first live-action film adaptation after a number of computer-animated direct-to-video and streaming TV films … This Barbie movie is directed by the Oscar-nominated American actress / filmmaker Greta Gerwig, director of the films Nights and Weekends, Lady Bird, and Little Women previously. The screenplay is written by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. It’s produced by Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, Robbie Brenner, David Heyman, Ynon Kreiz, and Josey McNamara. (courtesy First Showing)

Barbie has only just opened in cinemas worldwide but already it’s fair to say that the film is a phenomenon.

For the first time since before the COVID pandemic, cinemas are packed and humming – this joyously busy dynamic has been helped along too by the release of Oppenheimer on the same day, which generated the buzz-worthy fun of #Barbenheimer where people saw both films on opening day – with people dressing up in pink everything, crowds cheering the film’s beguiling mix of froth & colour and some seriously on-point messaging, and characters capable of being both serious and silly.

The film is a joy to watch and so it stands to reason that the character posters are equally full of mirth and fun and they indeed are, and if you’re wondering the focus is on many of the supporting characters, it’s because while Stereotypical Barbie and (Ryan Gosling) Ken are the stars of the show, there are so many brilliant performances that the Allans and other Kens and Barbies of the world deserve their technicolour moment in the spotlight, too.

Barbie is currently screening in cinemas.
