What would you do If You Were the Last?

Adam and Jane (Anthony Mackie and Zoe Chao) are three years into a NASA mission that has gone very wrong: Their ship is broken and drifting between Jupiter and Saturn. Finding ways to pass the time as they become certain that no one is coming to save them, they argue over what to do. One day, Adam poses that maybe they should sleep together; Jane laughs the idea off, but it then prompts a flirty debate about whether they’re better off spending their remaining days as friends or something more … If You Were the Last is directed by Puerto Rican filmmaker Kristian Mercado, making his feature directorial debut after many other shorts and music videos previously. The screenplay is written by Angela Bourassa. Produced by Dan Balgoyen, Jessamine Burgum, Kara Durrett, Jon Levin, Dennis Masel, Andrew Miano, Gabrielle Nadig, Britta Rowings, and Sean Woods. So, here’s the thing.

You’re stuck out in space, floating in a ship and it looks very much like no one is racing to your rescue.

Do you (a) eat a crap ton of junk food (b) despair of the unfairness of life or (c), and here’s the one If You Were the Last rather winningly plumps for, propose to our travelling partner that you seal the deal and make the most of an awful situation?

It’s an interesting conundrum and one that the trailer suggests the makers of the film had a lot of fun with; let’s hope it makes to Australia in some form.

Until then, one sage lesson has been learned – do not watch Alien. In a spaceship. In space where, you know, the movie is set … and yes, I am under a blanket fort, why do you ask?

If You Were the Last is currently streaming on Peacock in the U.S.
