Tron: Ares follows a highly sophisticated program, Ares (starring Jared Leto), who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings. The highly anticipated sequel to the sci-fi classics Tron (1982) and Tron: Legacy (2010). Tron: Ares, also known as Tron 3, is directed by Norwegian writer / filmmaker Joachim Rønning, director of the movies Bandidas, Max Manus: Man of War, Kon-Tiki, then he moved to Disney & made Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, and last year’s Young Woman and the Sea previously. The screenplay is written by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne. Based on the original characters created by Steven Lisberger and Bonnie MacBird for the original Tron (1982). Produced by Sean Bailey, Jared Leto, Steven Lisberger, Emma Ludbrook, Jeffrey Silver, and Justin Springer. (courtesy First Showing)
I am old enough to have seen the original Tron, lo all those many years ago, in the cinema.
While it looks wildly unsophisticated visually next to today’s efforts, I remember being utterly enthralled by the immersively compelling story that dared to imagine what might be happening inside computers which at that point were still a way off becoming the unbiqitous commercial and household items they are today.
Now, of course, with AI in the ascendancy and computers absolutely indispensable to our lives, a film like Tron: Ares is perfectly placed to not only dazzle us with cutting-edge graphics but to say something about where we find ourselves as a society when it comes to the role of technology, something it looks like the movie is going to make the most of.
I can’t wait to see this one!
Tron: Ares premieres in cinemas on 9 October in Australia and 10 October in U.S.
