The story of a family and a family business. A dark tale of espionage following a strained father-daughter relationship within a family business. Wes Anderson’s unique twists revolve around betrayal and morally gray choices in this spy comedy thriller. The Phoenician Scheme is both written and directed by acclaimed American filmmaker Wes Anderson, director of the iconic & beloved films Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Isle of Dogs, The French Dispatch, and Asteroid City, plus the Roald Dahl shorts for Netflix as well. Based on a story written by Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola (Moonrise Kingdom, Isle of Dogs, The French Dispatch, Asteroid City). It’s produced by Wes Anderson, Steven Rales, Jeremy Dawson, and John Peet. (courtesy First Showing)

Watching a Wes Anderson film feels like being gleefully and imaginatively subsumed into a fabulously beguiling wonder world of colour, charming strangeness and deftly executed morality.

With a distinctively retro look and hyper-coloured pallete, Anderson’s films feel like modern fairytale sourng forth from a place where weirdness abounds but so does real grounded humanity too because while the stories might seem fancifully strange, they are rooted in some savagely accurate observations about what makes people and the world they have created tick.

Every new film from this new film is a treat, and while they may sometimes feel like they elevate art over emotional substance, they are always worth watching and losing yourself and I have no doubt The Phoenician Scheme will be the same when it releases 29 May in Australia and in the U.S. on 30 May.
