The new season will pick up in the aftermath of season one’s epic finale and take audiences along for a journey through the wasteland of the Mojave to the post-apocalyptic city of New Vegas. Based on one of the greatest video game series of all time, Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. 200 years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left — and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird, highly violent universe waiting for them. Fallout is a series created & written & showrun by TV creators / writers Geneva Robertson-Dworet & Graham Wagner. With eps from season two directed by Frederick E.O. Toye, also of Lost in Space, The Terminal List, See, Shogun, The Boys. Produced by Kilter Films. Based on the video game series created by Bethesda Softworks; the very first Fallout game launched back in 1997. It’s executive produced by James Altman, Todd Howard, Lisa Joy, Jonathan Nolan, Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Graham Wagner, Athena Wickham. (courtesy First Showing)

We’ve seen endlessly myriad takes on the apocalypse by now and to be honest, it’s all beginning to feel like the same old same old (an odd term to use for future event but here we are).

But Fallout, which makes me wish I was a gamer because it sounds outrageously and imaginatively good, has upended all of that world weary end of civilisation storytelling with a fantastically clever and emotionally thoughtful take on the apocalypse.

As season one beautifully showed us, people will still be people even when there’s nothing left to fight over, and the question then must be asked – is there any point to civility and justice and all the good things we pride ourselves on as a species?

It’s a BIG question at the best of times but in the weird, strange, oddly familiar world of Fallout, it has even more resonance and watching the upcoming season, it will be fascinating to see just what kinds of answers the show comes up with.

Fallout S2 releases 17 December on Prime Video.
