We never get to see any Star Wars spaceships in any sort of physical context because they’re always next to like planets or in outer space or next to arbitrary sci-fi cities. It got me wondering what they would look like if I put them in places you’re familiar with… (synopsis via Laughing Squid (c) Wren Weichman, Corridor Digital)
I have to be honest here – I have never once wondered how big all the various spaceships of Star Wars are in real life; in other words, if they appeared over the cities of Earth, how much room would they take up and how big a shadow would they cast?
But rather happily, Wren Weichman has, going to a great deal of trouble to explain, in the words of Laughing Squid, “the relative size of Star Wars planets and spaceships by spatially comparing them to more familiar locations.”
It’s actually a lot of fun to see what it would be like to have the Death Star appear in the skies – not, it turns out, as imposing as you might think – or to have a Star Destroyer hover over New York City or upended next to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
Even better than all the facts and figures, which are impressive don’t get me wrong, is Weichman’s enthusiasm for his subject matter which is infectiously enthusiastic, something any Star Wars fan, including yours truly, can absolutely relate to!
