Former Avenger Clint Barton has a seemingly simple mission: get back to his family for Christmas. Possible? Maybe with the help of Kate Bishop, a 22-year-old archer with dreams of becoming a Super Hero. The two are forced to work together when a presence from Barton’s past threatens to derail far more than the festive spirit. Hawkeye sees Jeremy Renner returning as Clint Barton alongside Hailee Steinfeld (Bumblebee) as Kate Bishop, Florence Pugh (Black Widow) as Yelena Belova, Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring) as Eleanor Bishop, Fra Fee (Les Miserables) as Kazi, Tony Dalton (Better Call Saul) as Jack Duquesne, Zahn McClarnon (Fargo) as William Lopez, newcomer Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez, and Jolt as Lucky the Pizza Dog. There’s so much to love about Hawkeye, which effortlessly and charmingly managed to combine superhero action, sassy, quip-heavy humour and raw, intense humanity in one gloriously festive package.
And, we should add, some vibrantly crisp and fully-formed characterisation, courtesy of pretty much everyone involved including, your canine-loving heart will be happy to know, Lucky the Pizza Dog, who’s adopted by Kate Bishop and becomes a key part of the Hawkeye team as get to the bottom of a messy conspiracy of sorts.
Lucky, who apparently executed her role as a pizza-chomping companion seamlessly, is actually played by Jolt the Golden receiver who hit all her marks, and even managed to nail her stunts without fault.
She’s a delight however you cut it and added to the joy of a show that managed to humanise Marvel in a way that really hit home emotionally while entertaining us with its trademark epic action.
Hawkeye is currently streaming on Disney+, and sure, Christmas may be over but the fun of watching this show is not.
Enjoy, and oh, remember to slip Lucky a slice of pizza while you’re at it, will ya?
