Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (DS9), which remains my favourite show in a franchise full to the Andorian gills with them, is, for the most part a very serious show.
Sure, there’s some silly, fun episodes – think “The Magnificent Ferengi”, “Take Me Out to the Holosuite”, “Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang”, “You Are Cordially Invited” and “In the Cards” – but mostly DS9 rife with war, repercussions of colonial oppression and violence and geopolitical maneuvering is a very intensely gritty affair, which is, of course, largely why I love it so much.
Even so, it’s those moments of fun and whimsy, of lighthearted character interactions that make it a pleasure to watch too – we appreciate the action-oriented drama all the more because we know so many aspects of what makes the characters in the firing line tick – and it’s great to see that YouTube user Sheldon has managed to mash up Friends and DS9 to hugely enjoyable effect.
Of course, this is not the first time Friends‘ theme song, “I’ll Be There For You” by The Rembrandts has found itself married with a show that has not a shred of sitcom sensibility, but this is definitely one of the better efforts, capturing the sense of fun that did pervade DS9 from time to time, enriching an already superlative show even further.
