Fire up the playlists and let the music fly free: My top 25 songs of 2024

People often talk about music soundtracking their life but in my case, it really is what happens.

I listen to music on the train. On the way to and from the train station. In shops. When exercising. When I need to just chill out and escape a very noisy world around me.

So much does music give my life sound, movement and colour that I just about fell off my seat when a now ex-coworker told me she doesn’t like music and barely listens to it.

I mean, I get that everyone’s different, and I absolutely respect and champion that, but the idea that you’d choose to not have any music in your life at all, left me stunned; such an idea is all but inconceivable for someone like me who get sustenance and emotions and thoughts and a sense of direction and perspective all from the music I listen to.

As usual, I listened to a lot this year and these 25 songs are just the merest tip of the iceberg but they give you some idea of what songs were floating my very musical boat this year, and what sort of music makes my world quite literally go round.
