I love the idea that someone somewhere figured one day that saying “May the 4th” sounds just like – well close enough to make it workable anyway – “May the force …” and thus, unwittingly, gave birth to what would one day become Star Wars Day.
Disney, as the newly minted owners of the Star Wars franchise are celebrating in a big way of course, but everywhere around the world, Star Wars nerds will be packing their favourite cantinas, dressing as Darth Vader or Han Solo and thanking George Lucas for one of the most enduring and imaginative franchises to ever grace movie screens.
I can still recall my first taste of Star Wars in a small cinema in Ballina, New South Wales, Australia way back in 1977 and the magical effect it had on a young boy who loved to dream and believed passionately in the power of stories to transport us to amazing, far off places.
So happy Star Wars Day to everyone and may … well you know.
