Falling Skies, the series that chronicles the epic battle between the remnants of humanity and aliens who are intent on wiping every last person so they can claim Earth as their own, is set to return to our screen on June 29 and what a season it looks like being, opening with a two hour premiere.

When last we saw the plucky resistance fighters of the 2nd Mass., they had attempted to forge a “more perfect union” between the forces in the new capital of Charleston, North Carolina, and the rebel Skitters, themselves an enslaved race every bit as resentful of the Overloards as humanity, encountering much resistance from understandably distrustful sections of the resistance, led by General Bressler (Matt Frewer).

The action-packed finale, which intimated there may be an unwitting spy in the human camp (Hal, played by Tom Mason), and proclaimed the news of a baby on the way for Tom (Noah Wylie) and Anne (Moon Bloodgood), also witnessed the appearance of a new alien race who could be a game changer on any number of levels.

Friend or foe? Hard to tell but the newest aliens in town will certainly shake things up a bit … or a lot (image via seriable.com)

The new extraterrestrial arrivals, who appear to be enemies of the aliens brutally occupying Earth, arrived in suitably dramatic fashion appearing mere moments after the 2nd Mass. had destroyed a gigantic, powerful gun aimed at the heavens.

While no one can yet be certain whether humanity’s enemy’s enemy is in fact our friend, they certainly look like a powerful force to be reckoned with, and will definitely make the battle between mankind and the Overlords all that more interesting.

You can reach a great recap of the season 2 finale “A More Perfect Union” here.

And what a season it’s promising to be, something underlined by the press release from TNT:

“As the new season of Falling Skies opens, seven months have passed since the survivors of the 2nd Mass reached Charleston, which has been named capital of the New United States. Now elected to public office, Tom (Wyle) has taken a more aggressive approach to the alien occupation than former leader Dr. Manchester. The government has formed a tenuous alliance with a band of rebel skitters who now paint their faces with a red and yellow stripe before battle in honor of Red Eye, their fallen leader. Tom’s son Ben (Jessup) serves as the mediator between Mason and the rebel skitters. But the alliance may not be enough to overpower the enemy Espheni, whose forces are now being led by an even more sinister overlord. To complicate matters further, another race of aliens has just entered the battlefield.

Charleston also faces dangers from within its own walls. Recent battle losses have convinced Tom and the military that there may be a mole feeding strategic plans to the Espheni. Despite the threats they face, the survivors living in Charleston are doing their best to rebuild their lives. Dr. Glass (Bloodgood) and Tom are focusing on their growing family. Newly promoted to Colonel of the 2nd Mass, Weaver (Patton) is enjoying a renewed relationship with his daughter. Hal (Roy) is recovering from mysterious injuries he suffered while trying to destroy an alien super weapon. Meanwhile, his romantic pursuit of Maggie (Carter) is finally starting to see positive results, though she has a growing concern that something is wrong with him beyond mere battle injuries. And Pope (Cunningham), the non-conformist leader of the Berserkers, has set up his own little Popetown on the outskirts of Charleston.”

You can watch a couple of minutes of heart-pounding action from the opening episode of season 3, “On This Ice”  right below the official synopsis of the episode, again courtesy of TNT:

“Season three of Falling Skies opens seven months after the 2nd Mass arrived in Charleston. In the interim, Tom has been elected to political office, but he has his hands full as the resistance continues to battle the alien invaders. Tom’s decision to have the rebel skitters fight alongside humans creates tension and raises suspicions that someone may be feeding secrets to the enemy. Meanwhile, Hal struggles with nightmares that seem so real, he has difficulty knowing if he’s awake or dreaming. And Tom and Anne prepare to welcome their baby. Terry O’Quinn and Gloria Reuben guest star.”

It’s going one adrenaline-fueled ride from start to finish and I can hardly wait to watch it all unfold.

Once more to the apocalypse my friends, once more!
