SNAPSHOT
Based on the award-winning sci-fi novels by Isaac Asimov, Foundation chronicles a band of exiles on their monumental journey to save humanity and rebuild civilization amid the fall of the Galactic Empire. The premise of the stories is that, in the waning days of a future Galactic Empire, the mathematician Hari Seldon spends his life developing a theory of psychohistory, a new and effective mathematical sociology. Using statistical laws of mass action, it can predict the future of large populations. Seldon foresees the imminent fall of the Empire, which encompasses the entire Milky Way, and a dark age lasting 30,000 years before a second empire arises. Foundation is a TV series showrun by writer / filmmaker David S. Goyer (writer on Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Terminator: Dark Fate). Executive produced by Robyn Asimov, Goyer, Josh Friedman, Cameron Welsh, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Marcy Ross. The series is produced for Apple TV by Skydance Television. It makes sense that an epic series of books by Isaac Asimov would become an epic streaming series too but we know all too well that’s not always a given.
You have to have people who know, love and get the source material, as the creators of AppleTV’s Foundation clearly do, to really make into the statement TV is so clearly is.
Series one of the show was enthrallingly nuanced, thoughtful and quietly but powerfully emotive in its storytelling, with immersively spectacular visuals to match, and judging by this trailer, there’s every reason to expect that the second series will be every bit as extraordinarily intense and affecting.
Humanity is as full-on as it gets and Foundation captures both our glories and our Achilles heels in all their praiseworthy and lamentable fullness, and it will be fascinating to see where this enrapturing chronicler of the human condition on a galactic scale goes next.
Foundation series two debuts 14 July on AppleTV.
