Frankly it could be for anything and that is the delight and mystery of the intriguing new trailer that has dropped from J. J. Abrams, the past and present master of the clever trail-of-breadcrumbs teaser campaign.
While some people have had a stab at what it all means – Jeff Jensen writing on popwatch.ew.com has come up with five, count ’em, five popular theories about what it could all mean, all of which I love and want to believe are true – for many people the short teaser Stranger is a delicious enigma to be enjoyed for the oblique tease that it is.
Frankly, and yes I know I am writing this on a pop culture blog where all manner of shows and movies are dissected down to the last closing shot and news is reported in all its anticipatory detail with breathless excitement, but I think NOT knowing sometimes is far more satisfying than knowing.
Wallowing in the unknown can be therapeutic in a world where everything seems to be known within 5 nanoseconds of it springing into existence, and I am quite honestly happy to enjoy Stranger as a Churchillian “riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma” moment and leave it at that.
For now, of course.
Knowing J. J. Abrams’ rarely equalled talent for building upon the initial tease with all sorts of building blocks of extra information and insight before revealing a project totally worth seeing – in other words, he delivers! – it will be all worth it in the end.
So for now, I will do what my mother always instructed me not to do and spend some quality time with a Stranger.
