The Day They Came: aliens invade Nigeria in science fiction short film

You know how it is.

You step outside for a quick smoke on what looks like a beautifully sunny day, thinking of nothing in particular, simply happy to be outside.

Then you, or in this case a character played by actor Tony Doe, hears a noise, turns around and raising themselves up behind are giant, warlike robots that look like the sort of artificial life forms Skynet would build if it really meant business.

At that point, it becomes transparently clear that you and really the whole world are well and truly up the proverbial with not even a twig to propel yourself …

… and so the alien invasion apocalypse begins anew.

But refreshingly this time it isn’t in London or New York but in the heart of Africa’s most populous city Lagos, a sign that digital technology is finally democratising the end of the world.

Or rather it’s leveling the production playing field so talented people like director Genesis Williams, vfx artist Eri Umusu and the newly launched Ficson Films, can blow up their own backyards and in very convincing fashion too for little to no budget.

It’s a promising start for the nascent film making/FX company, striking just the right tone narratively and visually and is one helluva of a way to introduce yourself to the world.
