Best friends Pebbles Flintstone and Bamm-Bamm Rubble are two kids from the town of Bedrock, a modern Stone Age civilization where dinosaurs are domesticated and helpful, including their lovable and loyal pet Dino. But the real ‘yabba dabba doo’ times are had in the open wilderness outside of Bedrock city limits in a place they call The Crags! There, Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm meet a never-ending roster of prehistoric pals and explore environments that are as wild, colorful, and surprising as the dinosaurs who live there. While I am a sentimental kind of guy, I am also a huge fan of characters and franchises I love staying fresh, vital and relevant.

After all, much as I might love a character or show the way they were, having them simply exists through the rose-tinted spectacles of nostalgia, modern audiences may not feel the same, and so it’s important for them to stay as up-to-date and fun as possible.

It’s why I championed the relatively recent spate of modern comic adaptations of classic Hanna-Barbera icons like Scooby-Doo, Wacky Races and The Flintstones, which largely succeeded in updating the characters I love while retaining enough of what makes loveable.

The same idea seems to be at play with Jellystone and Yabba Dabba Dinosaurs, with the latter releasing a trailer which is all manic energy and full speed ahead laughs.

It’s not entirely to this blogger’s taste, though it does look like fun, but it does mean a whole new generation gets to discovers Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm and the gang and that can only be a good thing.

Yabba Dabba Dinosaurs premieres on HBO Max on 30 September.
