BRIAR [is] a brand new four-issue limited comic book series from Eisner Award-nominated writer, producer, and director Christopher Cantwell (Regarding the Matter of Oswald’s Body, Iron Man, Halt and Catch Fire), rising artist Germán García (Ka-Zar: Lord of the Savage Land), and colorist Matheus Lopes (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) that reimagines the classic fairy tale as an epic dark fantasy adventure.

What if Sleeping Beauty never got her happily ever after… and instead had to save herself? Set in a brutal fantasy world that time forgot, this isn’t the fairy tale you know! (courtesy BOOM! Studios)

There are those who like their fairytales kept nice and pure without a hint of postmodern reimaginings touching their oft-twisted stroytelling.

But then there are people like me who, though they treasure the originals, LOVE the idea of upsetting the narrative apple cart if only to see what such creative playing around does to the story, or what you get from it.

BRIAR from BOOM! Studios is therefore right up my comic book reading alley, a seriously clever reimagining of the tale of Sleeping Beauty that hands the power back to the eponymous protagonist to see what she will make of it.

Honestly, with some dark and brutalist elements added in to the fantasy mix, with not a singing, house cleaning blue bird to be seen – sure that’s Disney’s Snow White but what the hell – this looks like it will really deliver the goods when it comes to stories given a whole new lease on life.

Issue #1 BRIAR released 28 September and is available from all goof comic book retailers.
