The Four Horsemen [Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Lizzy Caplan] return for a second mind-bending adventure, elevating the limits of stage illusion to new heights and taking them around the globe. One year after outwitting the FBI and winning the public’s adulation with their Robin Hood-style magic spectacles, the illusionists resurface for a comeback performance in hopes of exposing the unethical practices of a tech magnate. The man behind their vanishing act is none other than Walter Mabry [Daniel Radcliffe], a tech prodigy who threatens the Horsemen into pulling off their most impossible heist yet. Their only hope is to perform one last unprecedented stunt to clear their names and reveal the mastermind behind it all. (synopsis via Coming Soon)

The original Now You See Me was quite literally a magical movie as I made clear in my review of the film:

“Everything appears to be an illusion in Louis Leterrier’s (The Transporter, Clash of the Titans) Now You See Me with magic, or the suggestion of magic, suffusing the whole film.

“That the art of magic and illusion is the centrepiece of this fast-paced highly enjoyable crime caper is made very clear from the word go with each of the magicians who end up as The Four Horsemen, drawn together by a mysterious hooded figure with the aim of staging three high profile shows in Las Vegas, New Orleans and New York, shown practising their various crafts to their own highly appreciative niche audiences.”

If the trailer is any guide, it looks like its sequel, which carries the same swagger and over the top look and feel of the original, will be bringing all the action, subterfuge, tricks of sight and the mind and gleefully-realised skullduggery, and yes magic you expect from this franchise.

The joy of the first movie was that for all its blockbuster sheen, it retained an innate intelligence in its entertainment making it every bit as satisfying for the mind, which had to put all the puzzle pieces together at breakneck speed while drinking in the impressively dazzling spectacle unfolding minute-by-minute.

And there’s every expectation that the sequel, which will inevitably repeat the original in certain respects, will hit many of the same notes while displaying some advancement and progress to the storyline and characters.

Get ready to be surprised, delighted and immersed in a world bigger, brighter and way more genuinely magical than your own.

Now You See Me 2 opens in Australia on 2 June 2016 and USA on 10 June 2016.
