SNAPSHOT
Fed up with the Magical Realm’s obsession with large-scale fantasy warfare, Jack the Wizard decides to migrate to the sanest place he can think of: Melbourne’s Western suburbs. After accidentally causing a magical catastrophe, his existence (and that of his fellow magical immigrants) is revealed to the Australian public. Fearing a backlash against himself and his kind, Jack swears off using magic in a bid to better assimilate into human life.
But of course, fitting in was never going to be easy when people tend to get a bit ‘explode-y’ whenever you sneeze… (synopsis via LateNite Films)
If you’re a magical wizard locked in mortal combat with elves, goblins, orcs and the usual staple of supernaturally fantastical people and creatures from another realm, you must sometimes muse about getting away from it all, retiring to suburban life, cutting the lawn, having a drink over the barbecue with friends and generally living an uneventful life right?
Well if you’re Jack the Wizard from the 7th Dimension, one of the fantasy figures from The Wizards of Aus, who’s tired of endless battles and do-or-die life moments, and who retires to the anonymity, physical and otherwise of life in the more mortal realm only to find that his former life, rather annoyingly and hilariously, and in the form of homicidal wizards, refuses to leave him behind, then yes you do.
You muse like crazy, leave a battle midstream and attempt to remake your life far away from The Lord of the Rings-esque goings-on that have defined your life so far.
But as with most things in life, the wishing and the doing don’t always come together in the most perfect of ways, providing plenty of opportunity for sublimely comic moments which LateNiteFilms brilliantly exploit in the most pleasing and yes, actually accessible of ways.
After all, when you’ve used magic all your life, swearing off it can be a tad problematic especially when people explode around you when you sleaze. Yup, that could cause some problems with them neighbours.
Wizards of Aus premiered on SBS2, the brilliantly offbeat television channel of one of Australia’s public broadcasters in January this year and all six of its extremely funny, clever episodes can now be found on SBS on Demand and the Timtimfed YouTube channel.
Put your weary potentially war-ending fantasy feet up, try to forget about turning a major railway station into a fish monster and enjoy a very funny show about one wizard, who like the rest of us, simply wants an uncomplicated, happy, peaceful life.
