Jessica (Megan Stalter) is a New York workaholic in her mid-thirties, reeling from a broken relationship that she thought would last forever and slowly isolating everyone she knows. When every last block in New York City tells a story of her own bad behaviour, the only solution is to take a job in London instead, where she plans to live a life of solitude like a Bronte sister. But when she meets Felix (Will Sharpe) – a walking series of red flags – she finds that their unusual connection is impossible to ignore, even as it creates more problems than it solves. Now they have to ask themselves: do Americans and Brits actually speak the same language? Billed as a “super low-key love story”, Too Much looks like it will do a nice job of exploring how complicated love, and living life, can be.
Of course, there’s a reasonably high degree of heightened realism at work but then rom-coms generally benefit, if it’s calibrated properly, with playing things up a bit.
Just keep it real overall, please.
Too Much looks like it might manage that, with plenty of laughs and some insightful drama along the way, offering up some grounded humanity with the on-off promise that love, true love might be possible, after all.
Just watch out for the speed bumps along the way …
Too Much premieres on Netflix on 10 July.
