Based on DC Comics’ acclaimed series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, Y: The Last Man traverses a post-apocalyptic world in which a cataclysmic event decimates every mammal with a Y chromosome but for one cisgender man and his pet monkey. The series follows the survivors in this new world as they struggle with their efforts to restore what was lost and the opportunity to build something better. (official synopsis via Coming Soon)

You could well argue that watching a chilling apocalyptic tale in the middle of a pandemic is not the intelligently thought-out or emotionally wise of decisions.

But the fact of the matter is that there is something viscerally freeing about watching the world end for someone else and seeing they either rise to the occasion or don’t.

Obviously, some hope thrown into the mix is always welcome but as long as you have a compelling, well-written narrative and wholly engaging characters, watching these types of shows, even in the midst of COVID, can be rewarding experience.

While we only have a teaser trailer to judge this series on right now, the “post-apocalyptic science fiction comic book series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra” (Vertigo, 2002-2008) on which it is based is a piece of evocative, cleverly told storytelling which deftly combines action with some serious thoughtfulness on the human condition.

While that doesn’t necessarily guarantee a great adaptation, it does augur well for this new series being something worth watching.

Y: The Last Man premieres via FX on Hulu on 13 September.
