Mystery, mayhem and mirth returns in season of Only Murders in the Building

According to Hulu, season two will see Charles, Oliver, and Mabel “race to unmask” who killed Arconia board president Bunny Folger. It won’t be easy, though. For a whole lot of reasons that are bad for them but great for viewers. They’ll deal with multiple “complications.” The group “is publicly implicated in Bunny’s homicide.” They themselves then become the “subjects of a competing podcast.” And they will “have to deal with a bunch of New York neighbors who all think they committed murder.” (courtesy Nerdist)

In a year marked by the arrival of the Omicron variant and more pandemic misery that is good for anyone, the premiere of Only Murders in the Building was the gift to end all streaming gifts.

In fact, so much of a joyful impression did season 1 make on me in a year when I often felt stressed, beleaguered and decidedly not joyful, that I summed up the series this way, accent on the happiness:

“Armed with a playfully affecting score by composer Siddhartha Khosla, including a brief but pitch-perfect opening theme which comes complete with adorably incisive animation, Only Murders in the Building is happiness-inducing proof that while murder may not a warm-and-fuzzy undertaking, solving them can be, especially when it brings you friends and purpose you didn’t know you needed and remakes your life in such a way that you’ll never quite be the same again.”

It not only possessed an impish Murder She Wrote/Agatha Christie vibe but it also beautifully and touchingly explored how isolating and lonely modern life can be and how even something as awful as death can be the gateway to life getting remade again, not only warming the characters’ hearts but ours feel a whole lot of much-needed warm-and-fuzzy too.
