After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana (voiced by Aulixʻi Cravalho) journeys to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she has ever faced. Disney’s Moana 2 is written and directed by animation filmmaker Dave Derrick (aka David G. Derrick Jr.), a storyboard artist making his feature directorial debut, after last working as Head of Story on Disney’s Strange World movie and a storyboard artist on Raya and the Last Dragon. Produced by Osnat Shurer, executive produced by Jennifer Lee. Made by Disney Animation Studios – it is the first feature film to be made at the Vancouver studio. (courtesy First Showing)

Not at all sequels are created equal and there are times you wish Hollywood studios would just leave well enough alone.

But Moana 2, and yes it’s just a teaser trailer (but it’s a good one!), promises that this time around the word “sequel” will be used in relation to something good and absolutely worth watching.

Not surprising when you consider how good the original Moana was, and how beautifully it told it’s story with such immersive cleverness and rare cultural sensitivity.

So good was the original and so tantalisingly inviting is this trailer that I might be so bold as to say this will be one of the movie highlights of the year.

Moana 2 opens 27 November in U.S. and 28 November in Australia.
