When Anson Mount appeared in Star Trek: Discovery‘s second season as the legendary Captain Pike of The Original Series (TOS) fame, alongside Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn as Spock and Number One respectively, it became quickly apparent that here was a tight-knit crew with which you wanted to spend a lot more time.
Alas – SPOILER ALERT!! – they only appeared in the one season but it was clear that there were more stories that needed to be told about this crew and so, after much enthusiastic fan agitation and some wide decision-making at Paramount, Strange New Worlds (SNW) was born.
Taking place, according to speculation by Inverse, after Discovery’s second season, SNW will likely be set in the years 2258 or 2259, which is six or seven years before the start of TOS and Captain Kirk boarding the Enterprise”, the latest addition to the burgeoning Star Trek canon looks set to give us a return to episode-in-a-bottle storytelling which will be exciting.
While the arc-heavy narrative of shows like Discovery and Picard, and earlier, the gem that is Deep Space Nine, have been exceptionally well done in the main, the episodic storytelling style is one that harkens back to the franchise’s roots and promises diverse and interesting stories infused with the strong morality and visionary idealism that has so endeared Gene Roddenberry’s much-loved creation to millions of fans worldwide.
Let the frontier exploring begin …
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premieres on Paramount + on 5 May 2022.
