Set between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, the plot of the movie revolves around a band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans, and a very impressive cast has been assembled made up of names like Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, and Riz Ahmed (though WHO they’re playing is obviously a mystery). As a kid who grew up on the original Star Wars trilogy, there is no such thing as too many new films in that galaxy far far away and a long time ago.
Endless conjecture on what every Zaprudered frame means, every droids beep, every wink of a Stormtrooper’s eye (yeah yeah you can’t see it; that’s the point) yes but more and more of the actual movies themselves, no.
So it is with rapturous joy that I have received the first trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an anthology film that fills in the story between all those Bothans dying to get the plans for the Death Star, the destruction of which, of course, forms the basis for the storyline of Star Wars: A New Hope.
Apart from faithfully recreating the look and feel of the original films while bringing a new aesthetic and some of the sass we saw used so well in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the trailer gives us a look at a new kind of Stormtrooper – Hey U Guys wonders if they’re the much bandied-about Deathtroopers, a new kickass female hero, Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), and TIE Fighters and AT-ATs in abundance. (For even more cool details spotted in the trailer, check out this io9 piece.)
And gloriously it suggests a story rather than handing to us on a platter, a delight when you consider how many modern trailers over-tell the story before we even step in the cinema.
Which will happen on 16 December this year in USA and Australia when we once again enter the most amazing galaxy of them all.
