“Death. Destruction. Decay. It’s inevitable.”
What a cheery way to begin a trailer for the second half of season six of Fear the Walking Dead which, let’s face it, has been getting darker and darker, rather fittingly for a show set in the zombie apocalypse, since the day it first episode was broadcast.
Just how dark you say? Why let this synopsis via Bleeding Cool be your guide …
As Morgan’s (Lennie James) bid to free the remaining members of the group become bolder, Virginia (Colby Minifie) grows increasingly desperate to find her sister and protect the settlements from forces working inside and outside her walls. The second half of season six reveals the impact of what living under Virginia’s control has done to each person in this group, who once saw themselves as family. new alliances will be formed, relationships will be destroyed, and loyalties forever changed. When everyone is forced to take side, they discover the meaning of ‘The End is the Beginning.'”
So, no Christmas cards are going to be sent between the group this end of season?
Likely not, which is a shame in some ways because while The Walking Dead happily ripped relationships with alacrity, if it served the greater good of the narrative, Fear seemed happy to let people like June (Jenna Elfman) and John (Garret Dillahunt) to canoodle and stay blissfully in love, zombies or no zombies.
But that and other literal love affairs look to be a thing of the past, alas.
Let’s hope that doesn’t gut the heart out of Fear which has always been far more in touch with raw, honest humanity than its more brutalist parent, and all the better a show for it.
Fear the Walking Dead season 6b returns on Sunday 11 April in US and Monday 12 April in Australia.
And yes, a seventh season is in the offing, the announcement coming courtesy of this teaser trailer …
