Weekend pop art: Greeting cards get a funny pop culture twist

It’s always been lovely to get a card in the mail, especially around big, important events like birthdays and Christmas.

But in the current climate, where the pandemic has rendered many of us physical strangers to each other, they are even more special, a sign that we are being thought of, that people are going to the trouble to consider what would be most meaningful to us and that tangible things still matter.

True, we live in a digital world but as the continuing existence of CDs, DVDs, print books and on and on show all too clearly, we all value holding something in our hands, something that we can place on our shelves which it’s good that we have artists like Canadian Heather Buchanan who not only still make cards but bring a glorious, pun-filled, pop culture-centric flavour to them.

All these cards are available from the Etsy store of an artist who simply wants to make you smile and feel good:

“… think it’s really cool when we all just work to inspire and delight each other. So hopefully I have made some things that make you smile and make you want to pick up a pencil and make goofy stuff of your own.” (Laughing Squid)
