Step inside Laika’s Wildwood, where a powerful golden eagle commands the skies and magic takes flight. Wildwood – based on Colin Meloy’s illustrated book series – will see Prue McKeel leave behind her home of Portland, Oregon, venturing into Wildwood on a dark quest to save her baby brother, who’s been pilfered by a murder of crows. Wildwood is once again directed by filmmaker Travis Knight, who is also CEO of Laika, and director of the the movies Kubo and the Two Strings and Bumblebee previously. The screenplay is written by Chris Butler (ParaNorman, Kubo and the Two Strings, Missing Link). Based on the graphic novel series written by Colin Meloy and illustrated by Carson Ellis. Produced by Arianne Sutner and Travis Knight. Made by Laika Entertainment’s animators based in Portland, Oregon. (courtesy First Showing)
I adore any and all animated films from Laika Studios.
Exquisitely well produced with narratives that are dense but wholly accessible, characters that grip your heart and a heartfelt, often gently gothic sense of what it means to be authentically yourself and to be loved unreservedly for that, films like Coraline, The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings and Missing Link are a joy to watch and to treasure in your heart.
So, my heart is full with news that a new film is on the way from this superlative stop-motion animation studio, and while there isn’t an official trailer yet, we do have this rather lovely and magical featurette that leads us quite beautiful and tantalisingly into what lies ahead.
There’s no official release date yet but it is expected that Wildwood will be released sometime in 2026.
